Brothers
The Spanish Civil War began in 1936 and ended in 1939, during this war two camps opposed each other; The Republicans, defenders of the Second Spanish Republic, aided by the International Brigades and the Soviet Union, against the Nationalists led by Francisco Franco and supported by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. The war resulted from the failure of the nationalist uprising of July 17 and 18, 1936 against the government of the Second Spanish Republic.
This putsch is the culmination of the tensions generated by the Second Republic, which changed government 3 times, moving from left to right to return to the left during the elections of February 1936 where the Frente popular won the majority of votes. Strong tensions are created between the anarchists, the fascists and the parties of left/extreme left, leading to the putsch then to the civil war.
The People's Army of the Spanish Republic - name given to the land forces of the Second Spanish Republic after the reorganization of October 1936 - brought together the soldiers who had remained loyal to the Republic, the popular militias, and the volunteers from foreign countries, called the Brigades international. This all forming the republican camp, which also received material aid from the Soviet Union, France and the United Kingdom, opposing the nationalist camp. The latter received volunteers from Fascist Italy, called the Corpo Truppe Voluntarie and from the Condor Legion of Nazi Germany, as well as equipment from the latter.
Pedro and Adrian Sanchez Fernandez, two brothers from a large family in a small village in the province of Avila, participated in this civil war on the Republican side.
Pedro did his military service in the motorized infantry as a motorcycle driver. When the war broke out, he joined the International Brigades, still in the motorized infantry. He received the rank of captain and participated in the Battle of Teruel (December 15, 1937, to February 22, 1938). Wounded, he was repatriated to Barcelona then, during the Retirada, took refuge in France in November 1939, then joined the resistance in Berry from 1943 until the liberation in 1944.
Adrian, older than his brother, did his military service and joined the Security and Assault Corps, Cuerpo de Seguridad y Asalto, commonly called Guardia de Asalto, a police force, responsible for maintaining public order, which remained mostly loyal to the Republic.
This photo was taken in 1937 in Barcelona at a photographer's, Pedro's unit was stationed there before being dispatched to the front, Adrian was assigned to the Barcelona corps, the two brothers were in the same city, but did not didn't know. Adrian was on the terrace of a café with a friend, the latter knowing Pedro, sees him passing on his motorbike and recognizes him and tells Adrian that it is his brother, but he does not believe him, thinking that his brother is still in his village. The next day, they go to the cantonment of the infantry unit on a motorcycle, Pedro was there, the two brothers met again.
